Katie Zicarelli Gesell
I have the most experience with college students who identify as LGBTQ+, transgender, non-binary, or gender diverse, and neurodivergent, and who may be dealing with grief, life transitions, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, or coming to therapy for the first time. Clients often appreciate my ability to build strong rapport, allowing us to dig deeper and not shy away from “calling out” patterns and what may be getting in the way. At the same time, sessions can feel light-hearted with humor, sarcasm, pop-culture references, and my attempts at metaphors from your areas of interest. Therapy can be emotionally uncomfortable at times, so moments of levity matter, as does ensuring you're physically comfortable in your space. Maintaining an anti-oppressive lens means awareness of how multiple identities intersect to shape and compound an individual’s experience. I hold that in my role as your therapist by acknowledging my own identities as well as the identities and roles within the therapeutic relationship. I strive to empower you to see the progress you are making, and that my place is simply as a guide, not the one who has done the work for you. I believe in you showing up as your full self, in whatever way that means, and will model that alongside you with my own fidget tools or by dressing casually. I often reinforce that it takes time to feel comfortable, and I do not push for sharing beyond what you are comfortable disclosing. You are investing your time and resources in therapy, and I want to know you are getting something out of it. I value pointing out the small shifts I see: the moments you respond differently than before, the conversations once avoided that you are now facing, or the challenges that once kept you up at night that you now navigate with ease. Frequent check-ins matter; if something isn’t working, we will adjust together. Sometimes this means creating a specific format for your sessions, starting each one with a question, pointing out when the conversation gets off track, or asking what you’d like to start with that day. I find these individualized approaches especially helpful if you are grieving or neurodivergent. We know how hard it can be to stay focused! I know firsthand how nerve-wracking starting therapy can be. Sometimes it feels like there is so much to say, and other times like you don’t know where to start. You don’t have to have all of the answers, or any at all. In our work together, it will feel exactly like that: we are in it together. I consider myself your copilot while you are in the driver’s seat. You make the decisions about where to go, and I help you navigate how to get there, with the support, resources, and tools you need. If you like to balance humor with being serious, being “called out,” and appreciate collaboration, we will work great together. If you want someone to give you all the answers and lead your sessions fully, I might not be the one for you. If you are not sure, that is okay! Sometimes it takes time to figure out what you need, and I want you to have the right fit. If that fit isn’t with me, I will help find referrals and recommendations.

Hello! I am a Limited Licensed MSW who strives to create a collaborative, non-judgmental space so that each client feels safe and supported within the therapeutic relationship. I firmly believe that the client is the expert in their own life experiences, and this remains so within the therapeutic setting. Some of the main areas of support I offer include anxiety, depression, identity development, and navigating intersecting identities, college students, and life transitions. I also have a passion for working with those within the LGBTQ+ community. I use an eclectic style in therapy, drawing on techniques that best fit clients’ goals and needs. I aim to support clients in recognizing their strengths and feeling affirmed in their unique identities and experiences through a person-centered, empowerment-focused approach. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my cat, being outdoors, listening to music, and playing video games.
Andy Grossmeyer
i there! I first found my passion for helping people through studying Sociology at the same time as discovering my LGBTQ+ identities. I learned about the institutions and systems in place in our society that keep people from living as their truest selves. Then, during my Social Work program, I learned tools to help me help others. Before shifting my focus to therapy, I worked in LGBTQ+ advocacy as a Community Educator. My experience and education give me an understanding of and ability to work with people experiencing systematic oppression, including those in the LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and disability communities. During sessions, I love to use metaphors to help clients understand their situations in new ways. I think the best therapists are like mirrors. They help you to see areas of yourself that you might try to ignore or cannot easily see. If you decide to pursue a therapeutic relationship with me, I will walk with you in your journey of processing hurt, feeling emotional growing pains, and (eventually) radical self-acceptance.

Understanding why your brain does what it does is key to managing your mental health. That’s why I offer solution-focused support that emphasizes the education, skills, tools, and perspective needed to support your mental health and quality-of-life goals, while processing the emotions and experiences that brought you into my office. I’m a neurodivergent therapist, providing therapy from a queer, anti-oppression perspective. I am comfortable working with dissociative systems. I am explicitly affirming of neurodivergent, fat, kinky, disabled, trans and non-monogamous experiences and identities. My communication style is informal and VERY direct. Think of me as a mobility aid-you decide the direction, and Iḿ there to provide safety and support as you navigate the path. I am an eclectic therapist who pulls from different modalities. I can provide EMDR.
Drea Sims
I am an unambiguously Black, pansexual, cis-presenting, able-bodied femme who understands and emphasizes the importance of intersectionality within mental health. Born and raised in Detroit, I have a thorough understanding of the environmental obstacles marginalized folx are challenged with when exploring the state of their mental health. I uphold the belief that exploration and management of mental health is a lifelong journey, and I take pride in being able to assist on this journey. I have an eclectic approach to mental health, including the promotion of methods for holistic health. My areas of focus include creating safe spaces for Black folx, POC, non-monogamous folx, and those in the LGBTQIA2SP+ communities. I provide talk therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral informed therapy (DBT-informed), motivational interviewing (MI), and solution-focused therapy models. While these are my current areas of comfort, I am open to exploring additional modalities that may be of interest to clients. Therapy is a collaborative space, and I treat it as such. Other areas of focus include treatments for anxiety, depression, fat acceptance/liberation, intersectional stigmas, ableism, ageism, sexism, womanism, mindfulness, sexual liberation, sexual health, communication skills, academics, life skills, religious trauma, and the importance of Black femmes putting their cape down and resting.

I identify as a queer, disabled woman and care deeply about social justice—my identities, beliefs, and life experiences all inform how I show up in the therapeutic space. I believe we all heal best when we feel connected to other people. My approach is person-centered, empowerment-and strengths-based, which means I strive to meet you where you are with empathy and curiosity while helping you build on the strengths you already have to work toward your goals. I keep things casual and grounded in real conversation and deep listening, so you can feel safe showing up fully. My promise is to be a nonjudgmental presence as you practice new skills, face tough situations, and grow into all you hope to be. I work primarily with older teens and adults, and I’m particularly passionate about supporting people in the queer and disabled communities, those with experience in foster care, and womxn of all ages. I hold a Master of Social Work from the University of Michigan and a Certificate in Trauma-Informed Practice, and much of my career has focused on supporting youth experiencing foster care—work that has included psychoeducation and helping people develop coping skills for trauma and other mental health needs. I’ve also taught arts-based, social-emotional learning curricula to young people in community settings. I’m honored to be part of Transformative Therapy, whose mission of creating a safe, inclusive wellness center for communities often left on the margins inspires me. I have an eclectic approach and pull from many different modalities to find what works best for my clients. I pull from modalities such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Internal Family Systems, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Somatic techniques, and others

My space is for LGBTQIA2S+ folx, people exploring their racial identity, social justice activists and protesters, and any person who has suffered from oppression and is experiencing anxiety, depression, or low self-esteem, a negative view of self and others, and interpersonal and intrapersonal conflict. I want you to know that the problem was never you. Liberation therapy starts from understanding how intersecting oppressive barriers create the foundation for negative narratives of self and ultimately result in symptoms like anxiety, depression, and imposter syndrome. In our therapeutic journey, you are the professional on your own lived experience. Together we’ll work to identify core narratives and ideologies through a narrative lens, talk therapy, and exploring your understanding of self and emotions on a somatic level. Through this work, you’ll rewrite negative narratives, find collective resistance in culture and community, and build an empowered version of yourself with increased empathy and the ability to think critically about yourself and the world. As a liberation therapist, my approach is rooted in questioning Western Psychology practices through an anti-oppressive lens. Many approaches place the focus and blame on the individual, relate symptoms to “dysregulation,” and encourage squashing emotions to “get back to work.” My space is not intended for people looking for surface-level fixes. And while no therapeutic space can be labeled safe, I work to create a safer, more affirming space by being clear, open, validating, and empathetic to those who choose to take a chance on our journey. I’m in my second year of practice as a limited licensed professional counselor (MA, LLPC), and I’m passionate about working with individuals seeking to free themselves from the mental chains of oppression. These are the folx who want to find a deeper understanding of themselves and the world, the ones wanting to do the soul work, and those who have been seeking space for growth through insight and challenge. I am not here to place blame on you for your challenges, or to place Band-Aids where deep soul work is necessary. I became a therapist because I wanted to better understand myself and others. With so much pain, hurt, and hate in the world, I needed to better understand how we ended up this way. I have always been in helper spaces, and this work lets me not only empower myself but turn that outward. If you’re interested in moving beyond surface-level interest to deeper exploration and understanding, reach out, and we’ll see if we’re a good fit. Outside of work, I’m an outdoors person. I love gardening, tending to my plants, camping, hiking, and grounding in nature. I also enjoy crafting and painting poorly, and I’m heavily involved in protest, mutual aid, and collective community resistance.

If you’re tired of carrying everything on your own, constantly overthinking, people-pleasing, or feeling like you have to hold it all together for everyone else, you’re not alone. I work with teens, young adults, and adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, identity exploration, life transitions, and the messy process of figuring out who they are outside of survival mode. I have a particular passion for working with Black women, LGBTQ+ folks, trauma survivors, and anyone learning how to take up space without guilt. My approach is warm, collaborative, and honest. I believe therapy should be a space where you can show up exactly as you are, whether that means laughing, crying, venting, questioning everything, or admitting you have no idea where to start. I will absolutely validate your experiences, but I also believe growth happens when we gently challenge the patterns that are no longer serving you. My goal is to help you better understand yourself while building the confidence to move through life in a way that feels more authentic and aligned. As a Black woman, I understand that our struggles don’t happen in a vacuum. The ways we experience relationships, trauma, stress, identity, and mental health are often shaped by our families, communities, cultures, and larger systems. I strive to create a space where you don’t have to shrink yourself, code-switch, mask, or explain your humanity in order to be understood. Together, we’ll explore your experiences with compassion while recognizing the strengths and survival skills that helped you get this far. My work is rooted in trauma-informed care and draws from CBT, psychodynamic therapy, mindfulness, somatic approaches, and EMDR-informed interventions. Whether we’re processing difficult experiences, exploring relationship patterns, strengthening boundaries, or rebuilding self-worth, I tailor therapy to fit your goals rather than expecting you to fit into a specific model.

Julie Kaplan Counseling
Asking for help can be hard, but many challenges are easier to face with support and assistance. I offer a comfortable, safe space to talk. I believe that therapy is a collaborative process and should be tailored for each client, rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach. I will listen carefully and share my thoughts on how we can best approach your problem. We will work together to devise strategies and meet your goals. I enjoy working with students. I worked for the University of Michigan's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) for 7 years. I am a friendly and engaged therapist. I approach my work with dedication, compassion, and a sense of humor. I care deeply about my clients and feel honored that I get to help them overcome challenges, cope with difficult situations, and heal past wounds. I look forward to collaborating with you.

You feel exhausted from running in circles. You try so hard, but you still can’t shake the feeling. You over-schedule, overcommit, and always keep yourself busy. You listen to podcasts about stress and time management, but still have a hard time relaxing and having fun because your brain won’t shut off. You haven’t had a good night’s sleep in ages, and you never feel rested. Maybe you … • Can’t stop thinking about an incident or situation—to the point where it’s hard to focus when usually you are on top of everything. • Watch yourself overreact to people and situations, but you don’t know how to stop it. • Zone out and feel like you’re watching yourself from afar at a meeting or social event. Or maybe you lose hours at a time binging Netflix or getting lost in games or social media on your phone. • Spend a lot of time worry about other people’s behavior, motivation, and what they might be thinking about you. Say “yes” even when you don’t want to. • Know that you have so much more potential, but end up feeling exhausted and can’t shake the feeling that no matter what you do, you’ll never be “good enough. I’m here to support you with empathy, compassion and expertise. I specialize in supporting busy professionals, healthcare workers, and helpers of all kinds who have it within them to work through their pain and heal their wounds but need some help getting there. I’m a certified EMDR therapist who has over 20 years experience as a clinical social worker. My advanced training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (a somatic approach), and Internal Family Systems (“parts work”) means I have the expertise you need and deserve. I also have a background in improv and theater, so we may even find ourselves having fun along the way! Therapy doesn’t need to be all tears. My clients describe me as warm, collaborative, supportive, creative and nonjudgmental. Through my work with clients, I have learned that “words are not enough” and that therapy modalities that address suffering from a “bottom up” perspective have long-lasting, permanent results. Therapy approaches that focus primarily on coping skills and talk therapy to gain insight can sometimes leave you feeling frustrated, because no matter how much you try to talk and think your way into feeling better, it can only take you so far. You may intellectually understand your issues, but you still feel like there’s a disconnect between head and heart. My clients are looking for deeper change. My approach integrates EMDR with attachment-focused therapies such as IFS (Internal Family Systems) and body-focused psychotherapies such as Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, along with talk therapy, so that every step we take together is tailored to healing that includes both mind and body and helps you get to the root of issues so can start to feel like yourself again. My goal is to empower you in every step of the process. Together, we’ll identify the difficult experiences that are causing you to feel stuck and we’ll create a roadmap so that you’ll know how to achieve your goals. We’ll focus on your strengths and build on your resources with practical mind-body tools that really work for you. We’ll work on transforming old wounds that are causing distress so they no longer keep you stuck in old patterns and unhelpful beliefs. By the end of our time together, you will know that even when life gets tough—which it inevitably will!—you will meet future challenges with self-compassion and resilience.
